DuPont State Recreational Forest
A free 10,000-plus-acre state forest south of Asheville with waterfalls including Triple Falls and High Falls, popular with hikers and mountain bikers.

Waterfalls You Can Actually Reach
DuPont State Recreational Forest straddles Transylvania and Henderson counties around Cedar Mountain, roughly an hour south of Asheville, and it is free to enter. The forest covers more than 10,000 acres of trails, but most visitors come for the waterfalls: High Falls and Triple Falls are both a short walk from the High Falls parking area, and Bridal Veil Falls and Wintergreen Falls are a bit farther in.
Getting There
The main visitor center and restrooms are at the High Falls access area. Parking lots routinely fill by mid-morning on weekends, so the North Carolina Forest Service recommends arriving before 9am or after 5pm. Check the Forest Service site for current trail and road closures before you go.
Combine It
It is a similar drive to Brevard, so many visitors pair it with lunch in town or a stop at Pisgah National Forest on the way back to Asheville.
