Common Questions About Asheville

Quick answers to what visitors ask most.

The Biltmore Estate is the top draw, with the house, gardens, and winery. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers overlooks and trailheads near town, though sections north of Asheville were still being repaired as of September 2026. Downtown has the Asheville Art Museum at Pack Square and the Grove Arcade, and the River Arts District has working artist studios. Add a stop in the South Slope for breweries and nightlife.

Walking downtown costs nothing, and the public art, street music, and Art Deco architecture are the attraction. Pack Square Park is free, the Downtown After 5 concert series is free on third Fridays from spring into early fall, and driving or stopping at overlooks on open sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway does not require an entrance fee. Gallery browsing in the River Arts District is free too. See the events calendar for free festivals and concerts.

A long weekend (3 days) is the sweet spot. Day one: downtown on foot, the art museum, and the South Slope for beer and dinner. Day two: the Biltmore Estate, which easily fills a day. Day three: a hike or Parkway drive plus the River Arts District. With a fourth day you can take a day trip into the surrounding mountains. See our blog for itineraries.

Hiking is the headline, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, in Pisgah National Forest, and at the North Carolina Arboretum. The French Broad River is popular for paddling and tubing, and the mountains have mountain biking, waterfalls, and scenic drives. Hurricane Helene damaged many trails, roads, and recreation areas, and some are still closed or under repair, so check the current status with the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, or NC State Parks before you go.
