Warp, Weft, and the Grid (exhibition)

Warp, Weft, and the Grid is on view at the Asheville Art Museum from July 17, 2026 through January 17, 2027, in the Explore Asheville Exhibition Hall. It looks at 19th and early 20th-century southern Appalachian coverlets and how their designs anticipated geometric motifs in later modernist abstraction.
Historic coverlets are shown alongside works ranging from the color theory experiments and weavings of Josef and Anni Albers to Julian Stanczak's optical illusions and early computer-based art. The show also considers women's artistic labor and the material history of regional weavers.
Museum admission is $20 general, $15 for seniors 65 and up and $10 for students (plus tax), and free for members. The museum is at 2 South Pack Square. See the exhibition page.
