Mount Mitchell State Park

The Top of the East

At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. The state park sits off the Blue Ridge Parkway north of Asheville, and a short walk from the summit parking area leads to an observation deck with long views across the Black Mountains.

Current Access

North Carolina State Parks says the park is open and reached from the Asheville side of the Blue Ridge Parkway only, because the Parkway north of the park is closed from Helene damage. The park lists the Mount Mitchell restaurant as closed for the season beginning August 4, 2026, though a summit concession stand remains open, and Old Mitchell Trail is partially closed. High elevation also means fog, cold, and occasional winter closures, so check the state park page and the Parkway status first.

Tips

Bring a layer even in summer, since the summit is noticeably cooler than downtown. Fall color usually shows up here earlier than in the valley. See best hikes near Asheville for other high-country options.
