Gardens and Trails in the Pisgah Foothills

The North Carolina Arboretum was established in 1986 by the state legislature as part of the University of North Carolina System. Its 434-acre campus draws its design from Frederick Law Olmsted and pairs cultivated gardens with hiking and biking trails that connect toward Bent Creek and Pisgah National Forest. It is one of the easiest ways to get a mountain walk without a long drive.

What to See

The Bonsai Exhibition Garden and the seasonal garden displays are the main draws, and the Arboretum runs classes, guided walks, and family programs. The events calendar lists bonsai workshops and naturalist walks and talks.

Winter Lights

The 12th annual Winter Lights runs November 13, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with more than a million lights along a one-mile trail. Tickets are sold per vehicle on the Winter Lights page, and peak dates sell out quickly.

Before You Go

The Arboretum's construction page lists gate and trail closures, so check it before you go, and see best hikes near Asheville for trail ideas.
