About South Slope
The South Slope is where Asheville's "Beer City USA" reputation lives on the ground. A few blocks south of downtown, converted warehouses and garages hold a dense cluster of breweries, taprooms, and restaurants, and you can hop between several on foot. It is a nightlife area more than a sightseeing one, so plan to come in the afternoon or evening.
The Breweries
Burial Beer Co. has its original taproom here, and Wicked Weed's Funkatorium on Coxe Avenue is dedicated to sour and mixed-culture beer. Asheville Brewing Company on Coxe Avenue pairs beer with pizza, and Green Man Brewery runs two taprooms on Buxton Avenue, Green Mansion and Dirty Jack's, having been established in 1997. Twin Leaf Brewery is also on Coxe Avenue. Our brewery list covers the best of the scene.
Events
The Asheville Oktoberfest takes over the South Slope Brewing District each fall (the 2026 edition was Saturday, October 3, from 1 to 5 p.m.), with 20-plus breweries, cideries, and wineries pouring. The Wicked Spooky 5K starts at the Funkatorium on October 31, 2026. See our events calendar.
