About River Arts District

The River Arts District, known as the RAD, is a strip of former industrial buildings along the French Broad River that now hold hundreds of working artists. The French Broad flooded the district during Hurricane Helene in September 2024, and it has been rebuilding ever since. You should expect some empty buildings, active construction, and businesses that reopened in a new spot or did not come back.

The River Arts District attraction guide explains how the studios work. Many studios welcome visitors, and the district lists Open Studio Saturdays and Third Thursday socials. Its calendar also lists Second Saturday strolls for October 10 and November 14, 2026, and RADfest on November 14 and 15, 2026. The River Arts District Artists association says the area was recently named the best arts district in the country by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice awards.
