Downtown Asheville

About Downtown Asheville

Downtown Asheville is compact, hilly, and packed with things to do, which is why most visitors base themselves here. Within a few blocks you can see a 1928 arcade, a museum of 20th century American art, a boardinghouse from a famous novel, and a couple of the best live music rooms in the mountains. It sits well above the river districts, and downtown businesses are open, though individual restaurants and shops change, so check hours before you plan a meal.

The Layout

Pack Square Park is the center of downtown and home to festivals such as Asheville Art in the Park and the Lovely Asheville Annual Fall Festival. The Asheville Art Museum is right on the square, and the Grove Arcade, a 1928 landmark full of local shops, is a short walk north. The Thomas Wolfe Memorial is on North Market Street, and Harrah's Cherokee Center handles the big concerts and craft fairs on Haywood Street.

Music and Theater

The Orange Peel on Biltmore Avenue books national touring bands nearly every night of the week, and Asheville Community Theatre has staged shows on East Walnut Street since 1946. North Carolina Stage Company also runs professional theater downtown. Check our events calendar for what is on.

Where to Eat and Drink

Biltmore Avenue alone has Cúrate for Spanish tapas, Chestnut for creative Southern cooking, and the Wicked Weed Brew Pub. For breakfast, Early Girl Eatery and Tupelo Honey are downtown institutions. Our date night list and Southern food list have more.

Family Stops

The Asheville Museum of Science and the Asheville Pinball Museum are both downtown and handle a rainy afternoon well. The downtown Art District also holds a First Fridays art walk on the first Friday of each month from April through December, 5 to 8 p.m. (the next ones are November 6 and December 4, 2026).
