Asheville Neighborhoods Guide: Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore

A quick tour of Asheville's neighborhoods, from downtown and the South Slope to West Asheville, the River Arts District, and nearby mountain towns.

Asheville is small, but its neighborhoods have distinct personalities, and where you base yourself changes your trip. Here is a quick guide, with notes on how Hurricane Helene changed some of them.

Downtown Asheville

Downtown is the walkable core, with Pack Square, the Grove Arcade, museums, theaters, The Orange Peel, and a dense run of restaurants. It is the best base for a first visit.

South Slope

The South Slope is the brewery district just south of downtown, with Burial, the Wicked Weed Funkatorium, Asheville Brewing, Green Man, and Twin Leaf within a few blocks.

River Arts District

The River Arts District is a working studio area along the French Broad River. It flooded during Helene and is rebuilding, with many studios, a beer garden, and events reopened and some buildings still empty.

West Asheville

West Asheville is centered on Haywood Road, with breakfast spots, coffee shops, and a First Friday art walk. It feels more local than downtown.

Montford and North Asheville

Montford is a historic Victorian district with many inns, and North Asheville is a residential area along Merrimon Avenue with the Botanical Garden and local restaurants.

Biltmore Village and South Asheville

Biltmore Village sits at the entrance to Biltmore Estate and is recovering in stages. South Asheville covers Hendersonville Road, Biltmore Park, and Arden, with easy parking and barbecue.

East Asheville and Beyond

East Asheville has Highland Brewing and the Nature Center. Nearby mountain towns Weaverville and Black Mountain are easy day trips.

Where to Stay

For walkability and nightlife, choose downtown or the South Slope. For quiet, choose Montford or North Asheville. For easy parking and family logistics, choose South Asheville. See our first-timer weekend plan.
